We had a great time at our first fall meeting this past week!! A big thanks to Marilyn Williams (FL Alpha) for hosting our meeting at her lovely store Owen Allen in Winter Park! We had a great turn out with 35 Alumnae present and enjoying each other's company. Everyone enjoyed getting to shop around the store and mingle before and after the meeting. Everyone looked great decked out in all their Pi Phi gear - there were arrows everywhere!
Jeanne Curtin and Wilma (an assistance dog in training) from Canine Companions for Independence gave a special presentation. Canine Companions is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs. The Assistance Dogs are provided at no cost to recipients, but cost the organization $50,000 to raise, train and support. On November 9, 2014 Dogfest, a family-friendly, dog-friendly walk and festival will be held at UCF on the Memory Mall. People can walk individually or form teams to raise money. To register, go to cci.org/DogFest. Booth spaces at the festival are available for only $50, but are free to non-profit groups. If anyone would like to volunteer, is interested in a booth or would like information on the event, please contact Pi Phi Alum Jennifer Rogers. Everyone enjoyed getting to meet Wilma who was well behaved the entire meeting.
Our VP Philanthropy Cindy Solomon spoke about Feeding Children Everywhere and their mission to package food for people in need. We will be looking into a food packing event for the club so stay tuned and reach out to Cindy if you want to help organize it.
One of Co-Presidents Chris spoke about Beta Center and that we will be collecting board books at out holiday meeting to donate to the Center so be on the lookout for those. She explained that they also always need diapers and clothes donations but books are so very important but often forgotten when donations are sent in.
In addition to the philanthropy focus, we over viewed the club's upcoming events including our two interest groups - Sipping Sisters and Pi Phi Dining. For more information on all the upcoming events please check out your club newsletter and keep an eye out for our evites! If you aren't getting either of those please email [email protected] so we can get your updated contact information and add you to our mailing list!
If you missed our first meeting don't worry cause we'll all be back again September 27th for the FL Epsilon White Party!! Start perfecting your white dessert recipes!! We look forward to seeing you all there!!
